The problem I see with 3G/UMTS (which is the setting I used to get the 3G device working successfully) is that the init string is wrong and I am not able to modify it. I then found a post online where someone got the Pantech UML290 working on a linux machine and posted the wvdialconf ~/modem_config. Thus I did not load the ACM kernal as specified in the tutorial. I did dmesg | grep acm and the result came back close to what is shown in the tutorial. the tutorial is a bit old and seems to not reflect the current dd-wrt builds I think have the ACM kernal module support for USB modems. I followed the tutorial with some modification. I also tried this on 14896 with exactly the same failed result. I rolled back to 16785 which has room to enable jffs. I have loaded 17201 ddwrt however jffs is disable because of the image size.

I am able to get a 3G device to work using the 3G/UMTS setting without any scripting or pppd. I am still unable to get this device to work. I have also found information regarding the Pantech UML290 on google search which show how to get the device running on Linux machines, init strings etc. I have read the tutorial 'Cellular Phone/USB Modem As WAN Connection' multiple times.
